How to Prepare Before Starting Chemotherapy

Getting ready for treatment takes more than simply knowing your schedule. A chemotherapy injection (when speaking Thai, the correct term is ฉีดคีโม) can bring changes you may not fully expect, so it helps to start with a clear head and a steady plan. Here’s what you can do now to feel more ready for what’s ahead.

Schedule Pre-Treatment Health Checks

Before starting treatment, it helps to know that certain cosmetic procedures like natural aesthetic surgery may need to be delayed until your therapy ends. But more importantly, your care team will likely ask for a set of lab tests. These are used to check your overall health, organ function, and blood count.

If you have long-term conditions, e.g., diabetes or high blood pressure, make sure to share your current medications early on. Knowing your medical history allows the team to tailor a plan that’s safe for you and effective against your cancer.

Strengthen Oral Health in Advance

Information from Thailand’s Bureau of Dental Health can help you stay on top of routine dental care before treatment. Even if your teeth feel fine, it’s worth getting a full check-up. Small problems like gum irritation or tooth decay can become serious if left untreated during therapy.

Your body’s immunity will be lower, making it harder to fight off infections. So if any dental work is needed, have it done before your therapy starts. After that, some procedures might be delayed, especially if your platelet count drops during your treatment cycle.

Plan a Balanced and Hydrated Diet

What should you eat before starting chemotherapy? That question comes up often. Food plays a role in how your body handles treatment.

Eating from all five food groups can help you stay strong. Focus on lean protein, fresh vegetables, and foods rich in natural fibre.

Drink water throughout the day, not all at once. Aim for at least two to three litres daily, unless your care team says otherwise. A healthy, hydrated body handles side effects better and recovers faster between sessions.

Prepare Your Body for the Day of Treatment

Planning ahead for treatment day can help you feel more at ease. A light meal hours before the session is often enough. Something bland and easy to digest usually works best. Use the toilet before the session begins, especially if it may run long. Bring things that help you pass the time, like a book or music. Wear soft layers so you can stay warm or cool as needed. Some people bring a snack or drink in case they feel tired during the wait.

Create a Personal Support and Rest Plan

You may not feel unwell straight away, but it helps to plan for days when you’re not at your best. Let people close to you know what you might need, e.g., help with meals, errands, or transport. Even short visits can lift your mood and help you feel less alone.

Try to keep your sleeping hours regular. Proper rest can help your body handle treatment better. When things get overwhelming, don’t hesitate to speak with a counsellor or someone who understands what you’re going through.
